Beatrix lock

Construction of a new lock chamber

The Princess Beatrix Locks in Nieuwegein, the Netherlands, represent the main waterway link between the ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. To make the lock complex future-proof, a third, new lock chamber is being built. This obviously implies widening and renovation works, the demolition of the old dike and the construction of a new one protecting the hinterland against high tide. We applied several techniques for this project: temporary building pits with sheet pile walls for the concrete lock gates and anchored sheet pile walls as quay wall. Our expertise in deep foundation works enabled us to install diaphragm walls for the new lock chamber. We are proud that our knowledge and expertise paid a substantial contribution to such a prestigious Dutch hydraulic engineering project!
